UK Government Empowers Police to Arrest and Isolate Individuals in Response to Coronavirus

The British government is preparing to grant police and immigration officials the authority to detain individuals and place them in isolation as a measure to control the spread of coronavirus.

An Emergency Coronavirus Bill will be presented to the Parliament, providing ministers with necessary powers to address the virus threat and support the NHS.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock stated that the new measures outlined in the Emergency Coronavirus Bill would be enacted only when absolutely necessary and carefully timed to maximize their effectiveness.

The proposed law also includes provisions for increased phone or video hearings in court cases to prevent the spread of Covid-19, as well as enabling Border Force to temporarily suspend operations at airports or transport hubs in case of insufficient resources.

Hancock emphasized that these measures aim to protect lives and support the NHS, guided by leading scientists and clinicians. He also underscored the need for a collective effort to combat the outbreak.

England’s Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Chris Whitty emphasized the importance of evidence-based approach in response to the outbreak, highlighting the significance of individual efforts to minimize non-essential contact and travel while maintaining proper hygiene practices.

As of Tuesday, the UK has recorded 1,950 confirmed cases of coronavirus, with 71 reported deaths and an increase of 407 cases from the previous day.
