Tragic Outcome After Traditional Wedding in Enugu: Groom and Five Relatives Pass Away

Among the eight victims in the hospital are the wife, sister, and mother of a groom who tragically died alongside five others in Enugu State.

The groom, Obinna Dieke, and five relatives passed away on Saturday, August 27, at Eka Utara, Adani community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state following his traditional wedding.

Following the ceremony at the bride’s home in Obollor-Eke, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday, August 26, the Makurdi-based businessman and his relatives continued the celebration upon returning to Adani.

The next morning, all of them were discovered unconscious in a room with foamy discharge from their mouths.

Community sources suspect that the victims may have succumbed to carbon monoxide inhalation from a power generator, which was placed on the veranda of the house where they stayed during a rainy period after the wedding ceremony.

Chinedu Dieke, the younger brother of the groom, revealed to BBC Pidgin that their in-law, Joseph Ogbonna, and his two sons, Chijindu and Obinna, also perished in the tragic incident.

Chinedu mentioned that Nebechi, his late brother’s bride, as well as his sister, Goodness, and the mother of Chijindu and Obinna, are among those being treated at an undisclosed hospital in the community.

He also reported that their mother, the groom’s mother, is hospitalized but is responding positively to treatment.
