Tragic Loss of Nigerian Navy Officer Following Heroic Rescue of 59 Individuals from Drowning

Following a daring rescue mission in turbulent waters, the Nigerian Navy has reported the loss of one officer who heroically saved 59 individuals from drowning.

In a press statement by Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, the Director of Information, it was revealed that on July 30, 2024, a distress call was received from MV AMBIKA 4, a dredging vessel operating at the Okpobo field under a contract with Sterling Global Oil Limited.

The distress call indicated that the vessel was in imminent danger of sinking near the treacherous Okpobo River entrance, which is known for its turbulent conditions during this period of the year. In response, the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base BONNY promptly mobilized a rescue team consisting of 10 armed personnel aboard two interceptor boats. This team was led by Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer.

Despite facing formidable waves, the initial rescue attempts by the team proved to be challenging, necessitating the dispatch of an additional squadron of three boats to bolster the operation.

Support for the rescue mission included the deployment of assets such as the Nigerian Navy Ship GONGOLA, drones, helicopters, and a Nigerian Air Force helicopter. These resources played a vital role in the successful search-and-rescue operation that ensured all 59 crew members were saved. However, Lieutenant Commander Gideon Yashim Gwaza, the Base Operations Officer, tragically lost his life in the line of duty.
