Tragic Death of Pregnant Woman from Lassa Fever in Katsina

The Katsina State government confirmed the heartbreaking death of a 26-year-old pregnant patient from Lassa fever on Wednesday, February 6.

Executive Director of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (PHCDA) Dr. Shamsudeen Yahaya disclosed that the deceased pregnant woman’s 60-year-old relative tested positive for the virus.

Dr. Yahaya revealed that out of seven samples collected and sent for testing, four came back negative, two returned positive, and one is still pending.

Dr. Yahaya reported, ‘’The pregnant woman died on Sunday, while the other is alive and responding to treatment; there were plans to take the one that is alive to an isolation center in Katsina.

’The pregnant woman was vomiting, bleeding, and had an abortion just before she died.”

Dr. Yahaya urged residents of the state to adopt efficient personal hygiene practices including covering their food and washing their hands. He also mentioned that the victims had a travel history showing they came to Katsina from Bauchi State.
