Tragic Collision on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Results in 12 Fatalities and 4 Injuries

A devastating incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals and injuring four others in a solitary crash near Ogere along the bustling Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The tragic accident involved a White Mazda Bus with the license plate DDA733XA.

Reports indicate that the crash occurred due to a reckless overtaking maneuver, causing the bus to lose control, collide with the road divider, flip over, and ignite into flames.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed these distressing details in a statement released to the press on Tuesday.

The wounded victims were promptly transported to Patmag Hospital in Ogere for urgent medical attention.

According to the statement, “Today, Tuesday, August 13, 2024, a rescue operation was diligently conducted by the FRSC Ogere Unit Command in response to an accident that transpired around 3:14 pm

“The vehicle involved in the accident had the following specifications;
White Mazda Bus with the license plate DDA733XA. The total count of occupants was 16, comprising 12 adult males, three adult females, and one young female child.

“Four male passengers sustained injuries in the collision and were swiftly rescued, while the remaining 12 individuals tragically lost their lives in the fiery accident.”

The statement highlighted that the “presumed cause of the crash was a reckless overtaking maneuver by the bus driver, resulting in a loss of control and subsequent collision with the road divider at the center of the roadway, leading to the bus overturning and catching fire.”

In the midst of this tragic incident, Akinwunmi Fasakin, the State Sector Commander, expressed deep sorrow over the flagrant disregard for traffic regulations exhibited by some motorists on the highway.

Fasakin implored drivers to adhere to the designated speed limits on the highway and ensure thorough visibility before attempting any overtaking maneuvers. He also extended his heartfelt sympathies to the injured victims, wishing them a swift and complete recovery.
