Top contenders for Super Eagles head coach role and their strengths and weaknesses

The position of head coach for the Super Eagles is drawing interest from several candidates.

According to reports from NewsNow, potential coaches in the running include Janne Andersson, Herve Renard, Steve McClaren, Tom Saintfiet, Austine Eguavoen, and Samson Siasia.

Andersson, having previously led the Sweden national team, boasts coaching experience with clubs such as Örgryte IS, IFK Norrköping, and Halmstads BK.

Renard, who recently managed the France Women’s national team, has a rich history coaching national teams like Ivory Coast, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Zambia, and Angola, as well as clubs like Lille, Sochaux, and USM Alger.

Currently overseeing the Jamaica national team, McClaren has significant coaching roles with clubs including Queens Park Rangers, Derby County, Newcastle United, and the England national team where he managed for a brief period.

Saintfiet is presently in charge of the Philippines national team and has previously coached various national teams and clubs across different continents.

Siasia, who expressed interest in returning to lead the Super Eagles, awaits potential opportunities after serving a five-year ban for match-fixing.

Having managed the Super Eagles twice before, Siasia’s coaching history includes a brief stint in 2016 as well.

Eguavoen, who has managed the Super Eagles and various clubs in the past, currently holds a technical director role and is expected to select the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to finalize the appointment of a new coach since the departure of Finidi George earlier this year.

In a recent interview with NewsNow, respected journalist Femi Fabunmi shared his insights on the coaching candidates, highlighting Renard and McClaren as exceptional choices for their track records.

Fabunmi also noted Saintfiet’s success with the Malian national team and suggested Eguavoen could lead the Super Eagles in the upcoming qualifiers.

Regarding Siasia, Fabunmi expressed caution due to his recent ban but suggested he explore coaching opportunities with local clubs before returning to the national team.
