Tinubu seeks Senate confirmation for PSC board, Tunji Bello’s appointment

President Bola Tinubu has forwarded the names of three nominees to the Senate for consideration and confirmation for appointment as Chairman, Secretary, and Member of the Police Service Commission.

The names were submitted to the Senate at the resumption of a new legislative session on Thursday.

The nominees are Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hashim Argungu (Chairman); Chief Onyema Uche (Secretary) and Retired DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Member).

Earlier this month, Tinubu had removed retired Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase from his position as Chairman of the commission.

This comes as the PSC is embroiled in a dispute with the Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun, over alleged interference in the recruitment of constables. The PSC had called on Tinubu to dismiss Egbetokun.

In addition, President Tinubu urged the Senate to consider and confirm the nomination of Dr. Olatunji Bello for appointment as the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

Bello’s nomination was referred to the Senate Committee for Trade and Investment, while the nominations of Argungu, Uche, and Lakanu were referred to the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. Both committees are expected to report back in one week.
