‘Tinubu paying fuel subsidy more than before’ – El-Rufai

El-Rufai Claims Fuel Subsidy by Tinubu’s Administration Has Increased

In Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has alleged that the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu is providing fuel subsidies for Nigerians.

El-Rufai, addressing journalists, stated that the Federal Government is now spending more on fuel subsidies than in the past.

It can be recalled that in his inauguration on May 29, 2023, the President had announced the removal of fuel subsidies, claiming that the era of petrol subsidies was over.

This decision led to a surge in fuel prices and a subsequent economic downturn that has plagued the nation since 2023.

However, El-Rufai informed the press that the subsidy has been reinstated.

According to him, the government reintroduced the subsidy because the planned supportive measures to alleviate its impact were not effective, leading to the increased subsidy on petrol.

He highlighted that many are unaware of the return of the fuel subsidy.

El-Rufai pointed out the continued subsidy on petrol by comparing its price to diesel, noting that diesel is priced over a thousand naira while petrol remains at N600 per liter.

He emphasized, “This indicates that petrol is still being subsidized as the government realized that adjustments were required in the initial implementation of the fuel subsidy.”
