Timaya criticizes Nigerian awards, comparing them to Grammy

During a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, Lagos, Nigerian artist Timaya expressed his opinion that Nigerian awards lack credibility, even going as far as saying they are worse than the Grammys in terms of credibility.

Timaya responded to the host’s question about the Grammy’s utilization of Afrobeats and the suggestion for Nigerian artists to focus on local growth. He questioned the credibility of Nigerian awards, citing examples such as the Hip-hop awards and Hip TV awards (The Headies), and stated that they are not reliable either, going as far as saying they are even worse than the Grammys.

He emphasized the need for a homegrown award that is credible enough to attract artists towards it. Despite the recent disappointment of Nigerian artists not winning at the Grammy, Timaya asserted that the Grammy remains a prestigious award and that Nigerian artists should not be discouraged by the loss but rather strive for future success.
