Tiger at a zoo in New York City tests positive for Coronavirus

The recent news about a tiger at the Bronx Zoo testing positive for COVID-19 has raised concerns about the spread of the virus to animals. The 4-year-old Malayan tiger named Nadia is believed to be the first known case of an animal contracting the virus in the U.S. or anywhere in the world. The tiger was exposed to the virus by a zoo worker who was not showing symptoms at the time.

Federal officials and the zoo announced the positive test result after conducting tests at the USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa. It’s been reported that six other large cats and three African lions at the zoo are also showing symptoms of coronavirus but are expected to recover. The zoo has implemented appropriate measures to care for the cats and minimize further exposure.

Despite a decrease in appetite, the affected cats are reportedly doing well under veterinary care and remain bright, alert, and interactive with their keepers. This development highlights the potential for the virus to infect animals, and the importance of taking precautions in zoos and other animal facilities.
