The West African Examinations Council holds back 215,267 results

Results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination have been withheld by the West African Examinations Council.

This number makes up 11.92% of the 1,805,216 candidates who participated in the examination.

The 2024 WASSCE started on Tuesday, 30th April 2024, and concluded on 24th June 2024.

During the announcement of the release of the 2024 WASSCE results on Monday, Dr. Amos Dangut, the Head of the Nigeria Office of WAEC, mentioned that the results were held due to various reported cases of exam malpractice.

Dr. Dangut explained that this percentage was 4.37% lower than the 16.29% recorded in the 2023 WASSCE for School Candidates.

He emphasized that all instances of exam malpractice would be addressed by the Council, noting that schools, supervisors, teachers, and students involved were undermining the education system.

He mentioned, “The rise in mobile phone usage in exam halls, despite the ban in place, and organized cheating in some schools, are other concerning issues. All cases are under investigation, and reports will be presented to the Council’s committee for further action.”

“Decisions of the committee will be communicated to affected candidates through their schools. Candidates can appeal any malpractice findings through our website if desired. We must all work together to cleanse the system,” he added.

Dr. Dangut also disclosed that 73.79% of candidates achieved credit or higher in at least five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics, totaling 1,332,089 of the 1,805,216 exam takers.

He encouraged candidates, stating, “As WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024 results are being uploaded on the results website, candidates should, after checking their results online, apply for their Digital Certificates, which will be released 48 hours thereafter.”

“Candidates who have met their financial obligations to the Council can access their results on the Council’s results website within 12 hours. Schools will receive Result Listings soon,” he added.

The exam took place in four WAEC member countries: Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.
