Mamdani has published on his X profile (formerly Twitter) a video with Sánchez in which they emulate being basketball players while throwing paper balls into a trash can.
In the video, which lasts 21 seconds, both leaders dressed in suits have a conversation in English in which Sánchez tells the New Yorker: “You know that being a leftist means taking big shots.” “And making them,” the mayor of New York answers before starting to put baskets in the trash can. The expression that Sánchez uses (“taking big shots”) can be understood with the double meaning of attempting ambitious basket shots in basketball or, focused on politics, taking on great challenges at a political level.

In the recording, Sánchez and the American celebrate the “difficult shots” of leftist policies by throwing, as mentioned, paper balls into a trash can. During the video, Mamdani and the Spanish president laugh and emulate these basketball shots into a bucket, shooting from different positions and laughing while background music plays.
