The View of KWASU VC, Muhammed Akanbi: First-Class Graduates Should Not Seek Jobs

Muhammed Akanbi, the vice-chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), believes that it is senseless for a first-class graduate to seek a job after graduation.

Akanbi made this statement while advocating for undergraduates to develop entrepreneurial skills while in school.

During a visit with the university’s management team to selected government agencies in Abuja to seek support for the school, Akanbi criticized the graduation of first-class students without job-enabling skills in Nigerian universities.

“We encourage our students to engage in various entrepreneurial skills and consider all certificates important. It does not make any sense if you are a first-class student and you are looking for a job, regardless of the program,” he emphasized.

Our university focuses on community development and entrepreneurship. We have revamped our centre, now called the Centre for Vocational, Technical and Entrepreneurship, to provide practical entrepreneurship education rather than just theory.

Our students are involved in practical activities such as making face masks, face shields, hand sanitizers, tailoring, carpentry, mechanical automobile repair, and more,” he added.

A recent report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reveals that 21.76 million Nigerians are currently unemployed.
