Security cameras on a street in Omaha (Nebraska), near the University, have recorded the exact moment in which, suddenly and without warning, a huge sinkhole opens up in the road and swallows two cars that were waiting for a traffic light to turn green.
In just a few seconds the cars partially disappear, remaining almost completely submerged. The red one disappears almost entirely, leaving only the nose visible, while the gray one is in a better position, because it is a little larger. The sudden opening of the hole causes, as seen in the recording, the cars that had been parked behind them to reverse, scared in case the hole got bigger.
The drivers left on their own.
However, the hole did not increase in size. After a few seconds of anguish, several drivers approached the scene to help the affected drivers. Incredible as it may seem, they emerged from the vehicles on their own and without damage, even before the emergency services arrived.
As reported by local media, Omaha Police Department Lieutenant Dan Martin has urged caution, as the sinkhole could become larger. That is why the police have closed the road to traffic in both directions, so that workers can repair the damage. So the road will remain closed for several days.
The police have also thanked, through a Facebook post, the help of passers-by who came to the scene to get the drivers out to safety and to regulate traffic at the intersection. In addition, the head of the Department, Tom Schmaderer, has been excited because “the citizens of Omaha always help each other.”
