The Senate’s Request for IGP’s Investigation into the Disappearance of NSCDC Deputy Commandant

Senate asks IGP to investigate disappearance of NSCDC Deputy Commandant

On Wednesday, January 25, the Senate urged the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba, to conduct an investigation into the sudden disappearance of Raymond Terwase Gaadi, the Deputy Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC.

Raymond was expected to assume office at the Bayelsa State command but went missing upon arrival in October 2022.

His elder brother, Mr Terkura Gaadi, reported that after missing Raymond’s calls on October 22, 2022, he could not reach him, as his phones rang off the hook until October 30th when all the lines were switched off.

The Senate’s decision was reached following a motion by the Senator representing Benue North West Senatorial District, who is the Deputy chairman Judiciary, Human rights and legal matters, Senator Emmanuel Yisa Orker Jev.

Terwase is an indigene of Shorov, Buruku local Government area of Benue State, a council in Orker Jev constituency.

While presenting the motion titled ‘matter of urgent public importance’, the Senator, under order 41 and 51, noted that Terwase Gaadi is a deputy commandant with the Nigeria security and civil defense corps (Nscdc) posted to Yenagoa, Bayelsa state and has gone missing since October 2022.

He further mentioned that there was resistance from the officer that was to hand over to him and then suddenly the man was reported to be missing.

Senator Jev stated that Mr Terwase phoned his family and friends to inform them that the officer from whom he was supposed to take over was not only resisting handover but was threatening him.

According to him, two days after the call to his family and friends by the deputy commandant, an unidentified caller informed the family that Terwase Gaadi had gone missing. Since the October call, nothing has been heard of or from Terwase Gaadi.

The Senator expressed his concern over the nonchalant attitude of the NSCDC authorities and the absence of police intervention, leaving everyone to speculate about the fate of Terwase Gaadi.

The senate resolved to urge the commandant of the NSCDC to direct an internal investigation into the matter.

The lawmakers also urged the IGP to direct a full criminal investigation into Gaadi’s disappearance.
