The resurgence of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in Plateau

In Jos, the capital of Plateau State, residents involved in the protest resumed their demonstration against bad governance and economic difficulties on Friday.

On August 2, 2024, the second day of the nationwide protest began around 7 am.

Compared to the initial day in Jos where demonstrators voiced their concerns at different sites, on Friday, protesters gathered at the Old Airport Junction in the state capital. They sang, danced, and held placards condemning the hardships faced by Nigerians.

Our observer noted that most shops in the state capital were open for business unlike the day before.

Security personnel were visible at key locations for monitoring.

Several protesters, including former Minister of Youths and Sports Solomon Dalung, indicated they would persist with the demonstrations until the government addresses their demands.

Dalung expressed, “I am en route to the protest site. Unfortunately, the government appears to underestimate the gravity of the challenges faced by Nigerians. We hoped to avoid the need for street protests, which is why we issued a 40-day notice to the government before commencing. Instead of tackling the issues driving the protest, the government tried various methods to hinder it. However, Nigerians resisted and turned out for the demonstration.”

“The first day of the protest saw over 70% participation nationwide, which is a success. Therefore, we will persist with the protest, and the government must respond because the government is accountable to the people.”
