The Reason Behind Implementation of Curfew to Safeguard Innocent Nigerians – Announcement by Bauchi Governor

Expressing his discontent over the violence that erupted during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in Azare, the capital of Katagum local government area in Bauchi State, Governor Bala Mohammed addressed reporters following an emergency security council meeting at the state government house on Tuesday.

While showing solidarity with the youth in their demands, Governor Mohammed emphasized the state government’s opposition to any form of violent protest and its readiness to disassociate from such acts.

“We stand with the youth in Bauchi state, but we also reject those seeking to instigate chaos, violence, and destruction of lives and property,” Governor Mohammed declared.

“Protests are the right of every individual in a democracy. It is their right to express dissatisfaction.

“Given the prevalent hardships, it is imperative for us to listen, review government policies at the Federal, State, and Local levels, and as leaders, we must make necessary adjustments,” he stated.

Regarding the curfew enforced in Azare, Governor Mohammed explained, “It is a measure taken to safeguard other innocent Nigerians, the government, and the populace.

“We cannot permit the escalation of lawlessness beyond what we have witnessed today in Bauchi.”

Appreciating the security forces for managing the unrest, the governor urged unified efforts to prevent a recurrence of the incidents witnessed in Azare and certain areas of Bauchi metropolis.

“We assure the people of Bauchi of their safety and security through dialogue and ensuring that security agencies adhere to established protocols.

“This will prevent any unjust practices, biases, or excessive use of force while ensuring the protection of lives and property,” he reassured.
