The Protest Against Bad Governance Resumes in Plateau, Nigeria

In Jos, the capital of Plateau State, residents gathered once again for the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest, demanding an end to bad governance and the economic hardships plaguing the country.

On Friday, August 2, 2024, the protest kicked off at 7 am, marking the second day of the nationwide demonstration.

Unlike the previous day in Jos, where protesters dispersed across different locations to voice their frustrations, this time they assembled solely at the Old Airport Junction in the city. They sang, danced, and displayed placards condemning the challenges faced by Nigerians.

Our correspondent, monitoring the situation, noted that most shops in the city were open for business, a contrast to the previous day.

Security forces were visible in key locations, keeping a close watch on the proceedings.

Several protesters, including former Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung, expressed their commitment to continuing the protests until the government addresses their demands.

Dalung stated, “I’m en route to the protest site. Unfortunately, the government appears to underestimate the gravity of the challenges faced by Nigerians. We didn’t want people to take to the streets, which is why we provided the government with a 40-day notice before the protest. Instead of tackling the underlying issues fueling the protests, the government tried various tactics to thwart it, but Nigerians resisted and turned out for the protest.”

“The first day of the protest saw a success rate of over 70%, with a significant number of Nigerians participating nationwide. Hence, we will persist with the protest, and it is incumbent upon the government to take action because the government is accountable to the people.”
