The Nigerian government sets up a 24-member team to assess NPTF Act 2019

Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, the Minister of Police Affairs, has launched a committee comprising 24 individuals led by Nasir Sani Gwarzo, the Permanent Secretary, to scrutinize the Police Trust Fund Act 2019 and pinpoint areas necessitating amendments.

The Permanent Secretary, Nasi Sani Gwarzo, inaugurated the committee on behalf of the Minister at the Ministry Headquarters in Abuja.

The Minister highlighted that the Nigeria Police Trust Fund has made significant contributions to the policing sector in Nigeria through various interventions.

He emphasized the need for a review of aspects related to the board of trustees’ quorum formation, the board’s function and management, contractual agreements, limits to the board’s authority, as well as the funding sources for the agency since its establishment.

Expressing his expectations, he stated, “I urge you to analyze the Act and identify areas requiring changes, provide reasons for extending the 6-year period; develop a funding mobilization strategy. I encourage the Nigeria Police Force to evaluate and advise the committee on these matters.”

He encouraged the committee to explore international best practices in policing, solicit advice from various stakeholders, development partners, and others to enhance the quality of policing in Nigeria.

The committee members, representing the Ministry of Police Affairs, Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), Nigeria Police Force, and Ministry of Justice, are tasked with submitting their report to the ministry’s management within two weeks.
