The Nigerian Government Launches a Joint Committee Targeting Food Security and Inflation

Addressing the challenges of food security and inflation, the Federal Government has introduced the Agriculture and Water Resources Joint Action Committee. The committee aims to combine the resources of both ministries effectively.

During the National Youth Convention in Abuja on Thursday, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture, revealed this development. Organized by the Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative, the convention aimed to foster discussions on crucial issues.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Abdullahi emphasized its alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s food security agenda. He stressed the importance of diversifying agricultural practices to ensure sustained food production, especially considering Nigeria’s large population.

Recognizing Nigeria’s abundant water resources and river-basin development authorities, Abdullahi underscored the potential for year-round farming to enhance food security and self-sufficiency.

Emphasizing the partnership, Abdullahi mentioned the establishment of the Agriculture and Water Resource Joint Action Committee. This committee focuses on promoting dry-season farming in various river basins to boost agricultural productivity.

Collaborating with the River Basin Development Authorities, the ministries aim to engage agricultural experts and support farmers with necessary resources for enhanced production. The Ministry of Water Resources brings valuable assets such as water resources, land, and technical expertise to complement the agriculture ministry’s efforts.

Efforts are underway to support farmers in optimizing the benefits of the available resources and addressing constraints that hinder agricultural activities. By leveraging these God-given resources, the joint initiative aims to maximize agricultural output and improve farmer livelihoods.
