The Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi will miss the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe due to a groin injury sustained during the Super Eagles’ recent match against Lesotho in Uyo.

Awoniyi, who plays for Nottingham Forest, was forced out of the game and has since left the Super Eagles Four Points Hotel base in Uyo to return to his club for further assessment.

He had only recently returned to action after recovering from a groin injury sustained in a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace in September.

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, has alternative options in Victor Boniface, Terem Moffi, and Umar Sadiq to cover for Awoniyi’s absence.

The match against the Warriors will take place at the Huye Stadium, Butare on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 2pm Nigeria time.
