The Nigerian Customs Service assures Nigerians that food prices will soon decrease significantly

Assuring protesters, the Nigerian Customs Service promises a substantial reduction in the prices of food items in the near future.

Bashir Adeniyi, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, disclosed this at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Adeniyi informed journalists that some imported food items have already entered the country and will be cleared without duties and taxes to facilitate lower prices.

He stated, “The protest had various reasons, one being to alleviate hunger. It was revealed that a significant portion of food consumed in Nigeria is imported.

“Importation processes take time. To mitigate the impact of high import costs, the president has suspended customs duties and taxes on imported food items for a period.”

“We expect that this initiative will contribute to reducing food prices in the markets. The Nigerian Customs is dedicated to executing this fiscal policy outlined by the government.”

Adeniyi stressed the need to consider the concerns of all stakeholders before implementing the policy and urged Nigerians to be patient.

NewsNow stated that on August 1, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets demanding government action to address the high food costs and inflation in the nation.
