The Nationwide Protest is Suspended by NLC with Ultimatum Extended by Seven Days

The nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress has been put on hold for day two, following a review that deemed the first day to be highly impactful.

In a communique released to the media on Tuesday night, President of NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero and Ag. General Secretary, Comrade Ismail Bello revealed the decision to suspend the protest.

Ajaero mentioned that the Congress’ National Executive Council, during a meeting on Friday the 16th, 2024, had initially called for a 2-Day Nationwide Protest to show solidarity with Nigerians facing hardships due to government policies such as the increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the Naira devaluation.

Following a review of the first day’s protest, NEC assessed its impact and deliberated on further actions needed to address the ongoing hardships faced by the masses and workers.

NEC expressed gratitude to Nigerians, NLC affiliates, state councils, workers, and allies for joining the protest and conveying their dissatisfaction with the government’s policies and international financial influences.

With the objectives of the protest achieved on the first day, NEC decided to suspend street demonstrations on the second day, considering the overwhelming success.

However, the nationwide action will continue with simultaneous Press Conferences in all states by the Congress’ state councils, as well as the National Headquarters.

The ultimatum issued by NLC is extended by another seven days, now set to expire on the 13th of March, 2024, during which the Government is expected to implement previous agreements and address the demands presented during the protest.

If the government fails to comply within the given timeframe, NEC will convene to decide on further actions in response to the unmet demands.

The NLC reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and the less privileged in society.
