The Lagos Red Line rail initiates partial operations today

Commencing today (Wednesday), the Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail will start partial operations. This information was disclosed by Kolawole Ojelabi, the spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, in a statement on Tuesday.

Passengers will be transported on the trains, which will operate four trips daily between Oyingbo and Agbado.

LAMATA stated that the Red Line is among the six rail lines and one monorail designated for Lagos in its Strategic Transport Master Plan.

Furthermore, it serves as a transport project linking Lagos and Ogun State, as many Lagos workers and business owners reside in Ogun.

Ojelabi explained that achieving this milestone involved extensive planning and training of technical and ground staff, installation of security features, and a successful six-week trial run conducted without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency.

“Starting from Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line system will engage with non-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before commercial operations commence.

“Similar to the test phase of the Blue Line, the partial operations signify a significant advancement in realizing the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated, and sustainable transportation system.

“The initial phase of the Red Line, spanning a 27-kilometer rail route from Agbado to Oyingbo, will offer commuters a reliable and affordable transportation choice, thereby reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for Lagos residents,” Ojelabi outlined.
