The Hunger Protest: Call from PSC for Nigerians to Embrace Peace and Support FG

Prior to the upcoming nationwide hunger protest scheduled for August 1, the Police Service Commission, PSC, has urged Nigerians to prioritize peace and back the Federal Government in its determined endeavors to enhance the living standards of its people.

In a statement released by the Commission and signed by Ikechukwu Ani, the Head of Press and Public Relations, on behalf of its chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), the call to support the government in healing the divided nation was emphasized.

Argungu stressed the importance of recognizing the government’s initiatives in nation building and avoiding being swayed by instigators of conflict.

He emphasized, “The current Government requires the support of the Nigerian populace to advance its goals of strengthening democracy and fostering prosperity nationwide.”

“The Commission acknowledges and commends the proactive measures taken by IGP Olukayode Egbetokun to ensure peaceful protests,” he added.

DIG Argungu also lauded the decision of the IGP to ensure that Police Tactical team leaders adhere to professionalism and uphold the rule of law in managing public demonstrations, labeling it as both heartening and reassuring.

However, he cautioned, “While the right to peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic right, it is essential for these protests to remain peaceful without escalating into violence.”

DIG Argungu further highlighted the IGP’s move to withdraw officers from additional policing duties as a step in the right direction to deploy more personnel fully prepared to promptly intervene and prevent violence from escalating.

The PSC Chairman urged Police Officers in the country to stand up for the nation’s fragile democracy, affirming that the Commission will consistently recognize and reward diligent work and dedication to national security.
