The ground-breaking achievement of UNICAL’s inaugural female Student Union Government president with a team of 50 aides

Breaking barriers at the University of Calabar, Blessing Alims, the trailblazing first female president of the Student Union Government, has made headlines for her recent appointment of 50 aides.

In an official announcement dated August 1, 2024, Alims expressed, “Following a thorough assessment of each individual’s integrity, passion, transparency, and dedication to advancing the Students’ Union Government, I am delighted to unveil the following appointments to bolster the effectiveness of our administration.”

The appointments encompass various responsibilities, such as Special Assistants overseeing politics, sports, religious affairs, media, among others.

Upon the circulation of the announcement, Alims faced criticism for appointing such a substantial number of aides. However, in response to the backlash, she released a statement via her press secretary, Chinenye Madueke, on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.

Titled ‘Responding to concerns regarding appointments,’ Alims asserted, “The Students’ Union Government bears the responsibility for the welfare and advancement of our entire university community. Just like a single tree does not constitute a forest, effective governance for a student populace exceeding 42,000 necessitates a collaborative approach. A diverse and competent team is crucial for the successful execution of our initiatives.”

A student of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolutions within the Department of Political Science, Alims assumed office as the SUG President on June 14, 2024.
