The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Shuts Down KFC Branch for Discrimination against Former Ogun Governor’s Son

At the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State, a branch of the popular food outlet KFC has been closed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

According to a statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the closure was due to the outlet’s violation of the Lagos State law on People with Special Needs, specifically Part C, Section 55 on General Provisions on Discrimination.

FAAN took this action following a social media report from a Passenger with Reduced Mobility who alleged experiencing discriminatory treatment at the airport.

The statement highlighted the importance of adherence to the law which prohibits denying access to places, vehicles, or facilities based on a person’s disability.

FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, promptly intervened by assigning a team to investigate the allegation. The team included Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwosu-Igbo, and Mr. Kerri.

Based on the team’s findings, FAAN decided to close the KFC facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, effective March 28, 2024.

FAAN has mandated the KFC Management to issue a written apology to the affected Passenger with Reduced Mobility and display a non-discrimination policy prominently at their facility before resuming operations.

FAAN apologized to the affected passenger and assured all airport users of their commitment to upholding passenger rights.

The victim, Adebola Daniel, son of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, shared his KFC ordeal at the airport in tweets under @DebolaDaniel, describing it as a humiliating experience.
