The condemnation of the attack on journalists by hoodlums in Kano by NUJ

During the nationwide protest against bad governance on Thursday, some journalists in the field were targeted by hoodlums who exploited the situation to engage in rioting and mob violence.

On Sokoto Road, Kano State, hoodlums armed with weapons attacked a bus carrying 11 journalists from various media organizations, including print and broadcast, notably a Channels Television bus.

In a statement to journalists, the Chairman, Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abbas Ibrahim, and Secretary, Abba Murtala, revealed the incident.

It was reported by the Kano NUJ leaders that the hoodlums shattered the bus’s windows as it passed by, causing glass shards to hit the passengers and injuring some of them.

Adjacent to the Kano Government House, a car transporting reporters from Wazobia, Cool FM, and Arewa group was also targeted by the hoodlums.

The NUJ leaders, while condemning the assaults, stated, “Citizens have the constitutional right to engage in peaceful protests, but it is illegal and unacceptable to intimidate and harm others.

“Therefore, we strongly condemn the attacks on journalists who are fulfilling their duties as responsible members of society, contributing to the progress and development of our nation.

“We urge the authorities to take necessary steps to uphold law and order in the state.”
