The commitment of Kogi State to sustaining an eye care programme

Ensuring the continuous availability of quality eye care services to residents, the Kogi State Government has guaranteed the prompt allocation of the Blindness Prevention Fund as outlined in the state’s approved budget.

During the ceremony marking the conclusion of the Sightsavers Kogi State Eye Care Programme project in Abuja, State Governor Usman Ododo, through the representation of State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdulazeez Adeiza, affirmed their dedication. Ododo stated, “The timely disbursement of the blindness prevention funds is a priority, along with the maintenance of the eye care Hilux provided by the International Society of the Blind to support the logistical needs of the eye care programme team.”

Highlighting the significant impact of Sightsavers in providing eye health services, Ododo regarded the event as a transition rather than a conclusion. He acknowledged the organization’s contributions in delivering diagnostic and therapeutic treatments to numerous individuals, as well as conducting training for healthcare professionals on offering quality eye care.

Expressing gratitude for the support from Sightsavers International, which facilitated the establishment of comprehensive eye care centers, Shu’aibu affirmed the commitment to maintaining the program’s success and ensuring continuous access to quality eye care services for the people of Kogi State.

Dr. Joy Shu’aibu, the Country Director of Sightsavers Nigeria, emphasized the establishment of the state’s eye care committee by stakeholders to preserve the positive outcomes achieved during the three-year partnership with the organization. The committee is poised to uphold the progress made in improving eye health services in the state.

Reflecting on the achievements of the project, Selben Penzin, Senior Programme Manager for Eye Health at Sightsavers, highlighted the significant investment made in controlling preventable blindness within the state.
