The Appointment of Finidi George as Super Eagles Head Coach: Insights from NFF

Ademola Olajide, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has shed light on the factors that led to the selection of Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

Last week, the NFF officially confirmed Finidi’s appointment after considering applications from various top coaches, both local and foreign.

Despite stiff competition, the 53-year-old former international player emerged as the preferred choice, having previously served as an assistant to Jose Peseiro, the team’s former coach.

Finidi also temporarily led the team during the friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in March.

According to Olajide, Finidi’s impressive track record and his experience working alongside Peseiro set him apart as a standout candidate for the position.

In an interview with Hotsports, Olajide remarked on Finidi’s career progression and achievements, highlighting his decision to return to Nigeria and successfully coach Enyimba to a league title.

Olajide further emphasized Finidi’s close involvement with the Super Eagles during his tenure as Peseiro’s assistant, particularly during the AFCON qualification and tournament where the team finished as runners-up.

Given the upcoming crucial matches, Olajide pointed out that Finidi’s accomplishments and proximity to the team made him the natural choice for the position with limited time for transition.

Finidi’s inaugural task as the Super Eagles’ head coach will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin scheduled for June.

So far, the Super Eagles have yet to secure a win in the qualifiers, having drawn their initial matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
