Journalist, Fisayo Soyombo revealed distressing details of deaths in FMC, Lokoja, Kogi state, where patients showed COVID-19 symptoms, accusing the state government of concealing the situation.
Soyombo disclosed that at least 4 patients died within a week at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja; however, their samples weren’t collected while they were alive or after their demise to ascertain if they had Coronavirus.
He also reported cases where patients exhibited COVID-19 symptoms and were subsequently discharged without being tested. One instance was of a pregnant woman with COVID-19 symptoms after returning from Lagos. She underwent a cesarean section at FMC, Lokoja on March 22 and was discharged without being tested.
Furthermore, there were patients in the O&G ward last week exhibiting respiratory problems and other COVID-19 symptoms, with three of them eventually dying.
Soyombo’s tweet indicated another patient with potential COVID-19 symptoms who died on Sunday, after attempts to collect a sample for testing were unsuccessful.
He accused the Kogi state government of a cover-up, suggesting that they might be concealing Coronavirus cases due to unprepared isolation centers and lack of funds for palliatives.
He stated: “Why would the state govt want to hide COVID-19 cases? There may be many reasons but I’m sure of three, so far: 1. None of the 3 isolation centres — at SDG/FAREC Clinic, the Kogi State Diagnostics Centre & the Maimuna and Usman Yahaya Foundation Hospital — is ready for use.”
Despite Kogi state’s claim of no Coronavirus cases, Fisayo’s findings challenge this assertion.
