The Senate Confirms Kingsley Obiora as CBN Deputy Governor

Dr. Kingsley Isitua Obiora has officially been confirmed as the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by the senate.    Following his nomination by President Buhari, Obiora's confirmation by the Nigerian senate came after a report from the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions.   Aside from Obiora, the senate also confirmed the appointments of  Zikrullah (Sikiru) Olakunle Hassan as the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Abdullahi Magaji Hardawa as the commission's Executive Commissioner-Operation, Inspection and Licensing,  Nura Hassan Yakasai as the commission's  Executive Commissioner-Policy, Personnel, Management and Finance and Sheikh Momoh Suleman Imonikhe as  Executive Commissioner, Planning, Research, ...

Tragic Accident: 15 dead and 38 injured after a truck veers into a river in Ogun (see photos)

A Toyota Canter truck plunged into dried Omi river on the Ibadan-Ijebu Ode road, resulting in the tragic death of at least 15 people and leaving 38 others with various injuries.   The Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Clement Oladele, confirmed the incident in Abeokuta on Tuesday. INEC Has Announced The Result of the Sokoto Re-Run Legislative Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates as the winners of the re-run elections for Sokoto North/Sokoto South and Isa/Sabon-Birni Federal Constituencies of Sokoto State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Abubakar Abdullahi of PDP defeated the incumbent lawmaker, Bala Hassan of All Progressives Congress (APC), with 68,985 votes against 42,433 lawful votes to clinch Sokoto North/Sokoto South House of Representatives seat. NAN also reports that PDP’s Sa’idu Bargaja also defeated his closest opponent of the APC, Sani Aminu-Isa, with 44,490 against 41,048 for Isa/Sabon-Birni federal constituency. Kidnappers release Nasarawa student a week after she was abducted

Following the payment of a ransom, a student named Hauwa Kana, who was abducted by kidnappers in Nasarawa, Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has been released.   According to reports, Kana, a 300 level Veterinary Medicine student of the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), was abducted on Saturday, January 18 around 3 pm, along Mararaba-Edege road while returning to Nasarawa.   The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N10 million for her release, which was later reduced to N5 million.   Her cousin, Eng. Muhammad, confirmed her release on Thursday, January 23, without disclosing the final amount of ransom that was paid.

Supreme Court’s Verdict on Aminu Tambuwal’s Election in Sokoto

The election of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has been upheld by the Supreme Court, following the March 23rd 2019 governorship election. Tambuwal ran as the PDP candidate in the election.   In a unanimous judgment by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the apex court rejected the appeal filed by APC governorship candidate, Aliyu Ahmed. This was on the grounds that he failed to substantiate his allegation of non-compliance with the electoral act and issues of over-voting in favor of Tambuwal during the election.   The court subsequently dismissed his petition.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Supreme Court to reverse its ruling on the Imo governorship election. The party's National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and members of the National Working Committee made this call at a press conference in Abuja. They voiced concerns about the Supreme Court's decision to annul the election of Emeka Ihedioha and declare Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the governor of Imo state. Devastating Fire Hits Sokoto Market

On Tuesday, a fierce fire outbreak at the old market in Sokoto resulted in the destruction of approximately 20 shops.   Confirmation of the incident came from Mustapha Abubakar, the Head of Operations at Sokoto Fire Service, today. He disclosed that the inferno commenced around 11:00 p.m on Monday and continued until approximately 2:00 a.m on Tuesday.     Abubakar mentioned that the affected shops included those selling cosmetics and clothes. He further added that authorities were present on-site to investigate the cause of the incident and assess the extent of the damages.
