Suspension of Four Students at Rivers Varsity for Assaulting Fellow Student

At Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, four students have been suspended due to their involvement in the assault of their fellow student, Victor Tobins.

The suspended students, who are also members of the Man ‘O’ War, have been suspended for one academic session, as announced by the university’s acting Registrar, Mrs I. B. S. Harry.

The university stated that the actions of the local security outfit violated university regulations.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning, the university’s management informed the public about the suspension of the following students:

Monsi Baridukaka Nwaaelibabari from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Victor Chibuike Daniel from the Department of Animal Science, Ezems Ikechukwu Goodluck from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Wilson Jacob Ree-Ugani from the Department of Marine Engineering.

These students were suspended for physically assaulting Victor Tobin, a 300-level Sociology student, on June 12, 2024, at Hostel F on the university campus.

The university management considered their actions to be against the university’s regulations, leading to their one-academic-session suspension.

The management emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence among students:

The management’s statement said, “The Management enjoined the student population to continue to live in peace and harmony and comply scrupulously with all the rules and regulations of the University.”

Following the assault incident on Tobins, students protested the following day, demanding the disbandment of the Man ‘O’ War on campus.

The protest disrupted a meeting involving the school management, Students Union Government, and the local security outfit.

Police intervention was required to calm the situation, with the protesting students assured that appropriate action would be taken within 24 hours.
