The Nigerian Labour Congress has asked the Electricity Distribution Companies in the country to reverse its recent tariff hike for Band A customers.
Joe Ajaero, NLC president disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
This comes as the Discos in Nigeria hiked the electricity tariff to N209.9 per Kilowatt-hour from N206.80 for Band A customers getting 20-24 power supply.
However, Ajaero described the hike as a crass display of insincerity and insensitivity by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government
He urged that discos and the government should not kill the people and the economy.
“We do not doubt that this frequent crass display of insincerity and insensitivity will pit the people against the government or vice versa.
“Underscores our argument that the government and entities in the energy sector are not serious about finding an enduring solution to our energy crisis.
“Given the further damage this latest wave of increase will do to our economy, we demand an immediate reversal of the hike.
“It is unjustifiable, unreasonable and malevolent. Government and DisCos should stop killing the people and the economy,” he said.
Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on April 3, 2024, announced a 245 percent electricity hike for band A customers.
The hike saw electricity go up to N225 per KWh.
In May 2024, it was slashed to N206 per Kilowatt-hour.
