States and Local Governments Urged to Optimize Increase in FAAC Allocation for Agricultural Development

An appeal has been made by the Independent Media and Policy Initiative to State Governors and Local Government Chairmen to make the most of the financial boost they have received through an increase in their allocations to bolster the federal government’s initiatives for enhanced food production.

During a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Chairman of the initiative, Niyi Akinsiju, voiced dissatisfaction with the sluggish response of state governments in supporting federal efforts to promote agriculture.

Akinsiju highlighted the recent move to waive import duties and taxes on food imports, emphasizing that this would lead to increased availability and affordability of food locally.

He also pointed out that the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development could potentially pave the way for more collaborative efforts to advance agriculture.

Emphasizing the significance of this initiative, Akinsiju noted that it showcased the President’s commitment to tapping into Nigeria’s substantial livestock potential and addressing ongoing conflicts between farmers and traders, while strengthening the agricultural value chain to generate more job opportunities.

Expressing disappointment at the slow pace of action by sub-national entities, Akinsiju stated, “State Governors and Local Government Administrators should take advantage of the financial resources available through the significant increase in their FAAC allocations to support the commendable endeavors of the federal government in promoting extensive food production.”
