Statement from FixPolitics: Nigerians are not a conquered people, government urged to listen

A citizen-led movement called #FixPolitics has strongly criticized the Federal Government’s response to the nationwide protest held on Thursday, stating that it highlighted a significant rift between the government and its people.

In a release titled ‘Time to Change Course: August 1, 2024 Citizens Peaceful Protest’, the group criticized the government’s reactionary measures towards the protest and its participants, emphasizing that Nigerian citizens were not a subdued population.

#FixPolitics Africa’s Executive Director, Anthony Ubani, voiced concerns over the government’s inflammatory comments and actions towards the protests, noting a fundamental disconnection with the realities faced by the people.

The group denounced the government’s attempts to discredit the legitimate grievances of the populace and portray them as politically motivated, rather than addressing the underlying issues.

According to Ubani, the government’s actions only served to embolden the citizens, who were wary of being silenced in what should be a democratic society.

Accusations were made against the government for allegedly orchestrating opposition against the protests, including utilizing traditional and religious leaders to quell dissent and restricting protest locations through court orders.

#FixPolitics highlighted the importance of peaceful protests as a constitutionally protected right, criticizing the government’s heavy-handed tactics and urging for a more open and engaging approach to dissent.

The group emphasized that the government’s insensitivity and lack of engagement with the people’s grievances could lead to dire consequences, as seen in previous instances like the #EndSARS protests.

#FixPolitics called for a shift in government approach, advocating for dialogue, empathy, and genuine policy reforms to address the widespread discontent and suffering in Nigeria.

They stressed the need for security to be provided to protesters by the authorities, ensuring a safe environment for peaceful demonstrations and preventing any undue interference by malicious actors.

The group urged the government to embrace the principles of democracy and respect the rights of citizens to express dissent through peaceful means, rather than resorting to oppressive measures.

In conclusion, #FixPolitics reiterated that Nigerians were entitled to voice their concerns through peaceful protests and urged the government to uphold its democratic responsibilities by facilitating a platform for dialogue and change.
