State-owned security outfit to be launched by Gov Alia amid ongoing herdsmen attacks

Anticipated to be operational by the end of May 2024 is a local security outfit by the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia. This initiative aims to complement existing security agencies in addressing the prevalent security issues in the state.

During the All Progressives Congress, APC, stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, the governor announced the forthcoming launch of the security outfit. The state government is currently in the process of acquiring Hilux vans and motorcycles to facilitate the operational reach of the security outfit across all areas of the state.

Governor Alia commended the collective efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies in safeguarding the nation, with a particular mention of Benue state. The establishment of the state-owned security outfit is envisioned to enhance the protection of Benue communities, thereby facilitating the safe return of farmers to their fields.

Over the years, Benue state has witnessed multiple attacks attributed to suspected Fulani herders, resulting in the displacement of approximately three million indigenous people from their homes into Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, camps.
