Spider-Man: No Way Home Makes History as First Pandemic-Era Film to Hit $1 Billion, Emerges as 2021’s Highest-Grossing Film

Breaking new ground in the pandemic-era movie landscape, the latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, has achieved the remarkable feat of surpassing $1 billion (£750 million) in global box office earnings.

Furthermore, the film has secured the prestigious title of being the highest-grossing film of 2021, with its global box office takings reaching an astounding $1.05 billion over the weekend.

This unprecedented feat has seen the movie dethrone the Chinese-made Korean War epic, The Battle of Lake Changjin, which had previously amassed over $905 million worldwide.

According to media data analytics firm Comscore, the last film to achieve the $1 billion milestone was 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since the onset of the pandemic in 2019, no other film had managed to reach this significant box office milestone.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, a co-production between Sony and Disney, achieved this momentous milestone in less than two weeks after its premiere, despite the rapid global spread of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, sparking renewed concerns regarding movie theater attendance.

As of the present time, the film has yet to be released in China, which currently stands as the world’s largest cinema market.
