Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, Announces Public Hearing for Infectious Disease Bill Following Controversy

Nigeria’s House of Representative Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, has revealed that the “Infectious disease bill,” co-sponsored by Pascal Obi, Chairman of the House Committee on Health Institutions, and Tanko Sanunu, Chairman of the House Committee on Health services, will undergo public hearing.

The bill sparked controversy recently, with some alleging that the attempt to pass it quickly supports public concerns and conspiracy theories on social media, both locally and internationally, claiming that the House of Representatives is being insensitive under the influence of undisclosed interests from global vaccine players.

During the Tuesday May 5th plenary at the lower chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, Gbajabiamila disagreed with critics of the bill’s timing.

He also emphasized that now is the appropriate time for passing the bill, which swiftly progressed through the first and second readings the previous Tuesday.
