Slang Phrases Setting the Tone for 2024

Slangs have played significant roles in various forms of art and daily conversations over time. Cambridge Dictionary defines slangs as ‘very informal language that is usually spoken rather than written, used especially by particular groups of people.’ These slangs are often utilized by individuals to emphasize their arguments and press home their points.

Many slangs have also managed to make their way into mainstream language and works of art. With barely days into 2024, a new slang, ‘No Gree for Anybody,’ has gone viral, signifying the importance of standing firm by one’s convictions and not easily yielding to others.

While not a new slang, its recent resurgence has been attributed to a gospel song titled, ‘I No Go Gree,’ by Sister Agatha Moses from her album ‘Thank you.’ The slang has already garnered widespread attention on social media, with numerous memes and posts highlighting its significance. It has even been inscribed on clothes and other items.

Another slang variant, ‘Kwechiri,’ has also gained popularity on social media. Some other widely-used slangs in recent times both on and off the Internet include ‘Dey Play,’ ‘No Evidence,’ ‘E don Cast,’ ‘Sapa,’ ‘E Choke,’ and ‘Japa.’
