Sickle Cell patient overcomes odds Sickle Cell patient who doctors said may not live up to 20 years reveals she’s in her 40s and is now a married mother

A woman diagnosed with sickle cell disorder, who doctors thought wouldn’t live to see 20, is now in her 40s, married, and a mother.

She took to Twitter to share her story and offer advice to others.

She wrote: “I am genotype SS. Growing up, I was so accustomed to being critically ill and having blood transfusions that I believed all children went through the same. I grew up hearing doctors tell my mum not to expect too much as I might not reach 20. My parents resigned to their fate.”

She added: “Today I’m in my 40s. If my parents were alive, they would be grandparents. I have had a successful career in broadcasting, the development sector, and politics. I excelled in all of them. I’m married. I’m still alive. It has NOT BEEN AN EASY ROAD, not for me or my loved ones.”

She went on to advise people to determine their genotype and undergo multiple tests at different labs to ensure accuracy before getting married.
