Shettima urges for greater unity in Nigeria

Vice President Kashim Shettima insists on a more united Nigeria, emphasizing that the nation’s diverse cultures should be perceived as a source of strength rather than division.

Shettima highlighted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration acknowledges the vital roles of traditional institutions in addressing the complexities of the country’s diversity. Thus, the administration will consistently prioritize initiatives aimed at celebrating the rich cultural heritage of all tribes in the country.

He delivered this message on Saturday during the 37th annual Akesan Day held at the Christ Apostolic Grammar School in Iperu Remo, the hometown of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

The event was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Governor AbdulRahaman Abdulrasaq of Kwara, former Ogun State Governor, Olusegun Osoba, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and Senator representing Ogun West, Senator Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, among others.

Shettima disclosed the firm commitment articulated by Tinubu’s administration to bring about positive transformation in the lives of Nigerians. He assured that they would tirelessly work towards achieving these goals.

He emphasized that festivals like Akesan Day, which aim to promote unity and progress in the Iperu Remo community and the entire nation, deserve commendation for strengthening national cohesion and serving as a unifying factor for greater development.

Shettima stated, “This festival, much like its predecessors, seeks the unity of the country. Ogun State has consistently been a cause for celebrating enduring cultural heritage and values that promote unity and development.

“We are here to express gratitude for reminding us about the roles of sociology and economics in cultural celebrations for nation-building. Our diversity is a source of strength, not division. It attests to our adaptability as a people.

“By celebrating our culture, we are celebrating our identity and pride. We are showcasing our richness to the world and inviting them to be part of our hospitality.

“Today, let us learn from the people of Iperu Remo the spirit of cooperation and determination. Together, hand in hand, let us continue to work for a brighter future and the greatness of the country, from community to community, culture to culture, state to state, and region to region.”

Speaking at the event, Abiodun pledged that his administration would persist in building on its achievements to improve the lives of the state’s residents.

Describing this year’s Akesan Day celebration as a double victory for him following his re-election case win at the Appeal Court in Lagos State on Friday, Abiodun affirmed that he would repay the support and cooperation his government has received by pursuing projects and policies that further uplift the well-being of the people.
