Shettima Affirms Tinubu’s Determination

Encouraging patience among Nigerians, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasizes President Bola Tinubu’s acknowledgment of their worries and stresses.

Shettima reveals that the president is cognizant of the oil subsidy cabal’s actions but remains resolute in advancing reforms despite the country’s current challenges.

Speaking at the African Caucus meeting 2024 in Abuja on behalf of the president, Shettima addressed the nationwide hunger protest, urging citizens to show understanding towards the president in the wake of challenges brought about by fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange market unification, and other economic reforms.

At the gathering, Shettima stated, “We are gathered here against the backdrop of what happened a couple of weeks ago in Kenya. There is understandable apprehension in the country, but here we are; no matter how long the night is, it must give way to the light of dawn. Surely, the weather might be cloudy, but it won’t rain forever.

“The president made the painful decisions. Reforms are imperative, and we know the consequences of unveiling a masquerade. We are aware of the oil subsidy cabal, but we are determined to push on; efforts will be made with human kindness. Please be patient; our hearts go out to our continent as it endures the cost-of-living hardship, but we shall overcome.”

Thursday witnessed Nigerians taking to the streets to protest against escalating inflation, food prices, and economic difficulties primarily stemming from policies and reforms implemented by the current administration.

The demonstrators, advocating for #EndBadGovernance, are pressing for a decrease in petrol pump prices to N200 per liter, improvement in security, closure of IDP camps, and electoral reforms, among other demands.

However, what initially began as a peaceful rally has escalated into violence in certain cities, resulting in clashes between law enforcement and protesters.

Reports suggest that at least 17 individuals may have lost their lives in Abuja, Kano, Niger, Borno, Kaduna, and Jigawa during the #EndBadGovernance protest held nationwide on Thursday.

In Abuja and Kano, one person was fatally shot, two lost their lives in Jigawa, six were reportedly shot by security forces in Niger, while Borno and Kaduna each recorded four and three casualties, respectively.

Furthermore, on Friday, police used tear gas to disperse the protesters, leading to numerous injuries.
