Senegal’s Remarkable Contribution to Fighting the Coronavirus

Reports indicate that Senegal has successfully developed some of the most affordable coronavirus testing kits in the world, priced at only $1 each, as well as 3D printed ventilators costing just $60.

A lab in Senegal leveraged its experience in handling AIDS and Ebola to create a COVID-19 testing kit priced at $1, as well as ventilators at $60 each.

Despite limited health budget, this West African nation boasts the highest recovery rate in Africa and the third highest globally. Out of 671 coronavirus patients, 283 have recovered and 9 have succumbed to the illness.

The impressive recovery rate is attributed to Senegal’s affordable coronavirus test kits, which enable the testing and treatment of more individuals compared to other countries.

Unlike many countries that only conduct tests when symptoms are exhibited due to test kit shortages, Senegal is testing everyone, whether symptomatic or not. This proactive approach has enabled the early identification of affected individuals and prompt initiation of treatment.

Thanks to this lab, Senegal faces no shortage of testing kits.

Furthermore, amidst a scarcity of ventilators, engineers in Senegal are utilizing 3D printing to produce more ventilators. While imported ventilators are priced at $16,000, those manufactured in Senegal cost a mere $60.
