Senate Pleads With Nigerians to Postpone Protests

Requesting Nigerians and supporters of the upcoming nationwide protest, the Senate urged them to postpone their plans for the benefit of the nation.

Following a closed-door session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio made this plea during plenary.

The anticipated #EndBadGovernance protest is set to kick off on August 1.

In his statement, Akpabio mentioned, “The Senate, in a closed-session, discussed issues related to its operations and the National Assembly as a whole.

“The Senate specifically assessed the current circumstances surrounding the looming protest scheduled for August 1 and encourages that a single year is insufficient to evaluate the current government.

“One year is not a sufficient duration for the policies being implemented by the current administration of President Bola Tinubu to produce the desired outcomes.

“The Senate urges the protesters to allow the government more time to address their concerns, considering the steps taken to improve the country’s situation.”

Akpabio highlighted these measures, including the enactment of the National Minimum Wage Act, the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira, and the implementation of the Students Loan Act.

Furthermore, he mentioned the recent approval of the South-East and North-West Development Commissions bills by the National Assembly to further bolster progress at the grassroots level.

He affirmed the Senate’s readiness to legislate on all issues that would provide relief to Nigerians in general.
