Sanwo-Olu praises peaceful protest in Lagos, urges restoration of calm

Commending the citizens of Lagos for their peaceful participation in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest on Thursday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of such peaceful demonstrations becoming the standard in the state.

In a statement released by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude for the Lagosians who chose peace over chaos while exercising their right to protest.

According to the statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu remarked, “The Lagos State Government observed the peaceful nature of today’s protests in various areas of the State and commends the conduct of Lagosians. This is the ideal way for our state to operate.”

Highlighting the slowdown of business activities in certain areas due to concerns about potential disruptions by troublemakers, the Governor reiterated his appreciation for the citizens’ commitment to peace and constructive expression of grievances through protests.

Addressing the concerns raised during the protest regarding food scarcity, the statement acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts to alleviate the situation by initiating measures such as opening the National Grains Reserve and suspending import duties on food items.

Additionally, the statement assured continued support from the state government, including the resumption of the popular Sunday Markets with discounts, reinstatement of the Medical Outreach program, and ongoing initiatives to ease the burden on Lagos residents.

Sanwo-Olu urged protesters to end the scheduled protest from 1 to 10 August, emphasizing that their message had been effectively communicated.

Furthermore, he encouraged residents to go about their activities without fear, as security agencies were committed to ensuring safety and allowing businesses to operate smoothly.

Recognizing the professionalism displayed by various security agencies involved in maintaining peace during the protest, the Governor pledged ongoing collaboration with all stakeholders to uphold peace and progress in the state.
