Ruling: FG required to compensate lawyer with N1 million and issue apology in 3 newspapers for disrupting RevolutionNow protest

The demand for the Federal Government to compensate a Lagos based lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, with N1 million arose due to its utilization of the police to disrupt the #RevolutionNow protest on August 5, 2019.

This legal action was instigated by the lawyer who sued the Federal Government for N500 million after security operatives employed tear gas to disperse him and other protesters.

Justice Maureen Onyetenu of the Federal High Court in Lagos has granted the lawyer’s request and awarded him the sum, supporting his claim that the Federal Government’s disruption of the peaceful protest via the police was “illegal, oppressive, undemocratic and unconstitutional.”

Furthermore, the court directed the FG to issue a public apology to the applicant in three national daily newspapers. Justice Onyetenu also upheld the argument put forth by the DSS, emphasizing that they were not involved in disrupting the protest.
