Residents of Ondo State Fear Repeat of EndSARS Situation Amidst Planned Protest

Concerns are mounting among residents of Ondo State regarding the upcoming nationwide protest scheduled for today, August 1.

Some traders have decided not to open their shops, fearing they might get caught in any potential unrest.

In a observation of the situation in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, it has been reported that there is a noticeable reduction in the usual movement of people.

A civil servant, Funmbi Oladiran, expressed her hesitation, stating, “I am hesitant to go to the office. I fear a repeat of the chaos from the EndSARS protests. I got stranded during the violence last time and couldn’t make it home. Thankfully, my kids are on break now, and I can’t risk leaving them alone with the uncertainty looming ahead.”

Charles Ebuka, a trader at Arakale Road, mentioned that traders had strategized to safeguard their goods from potential damage. He said, “We plan to stay close to our shops and assess the situation before permitting anyone to open for business. While peaceful protests are acceptable, the concern is some might exploit the situation for ulterior motives, targeting our livelihoods.”

On the security front, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Oladipo assured the residents of adequate security measures in place to thwart any attempts by troublemakers to disrupt peace and order.

He affirmed, “Our aim is to prevent a recurrence of the chaos witnessed during the EndSARS protests. We are committed to protecting lives and property. If you have information on suspicious activities, do not hesitate to report so we can address the issue promptly.”

The Commissioner emphasized on the importance of continued normal activities, stating, “There have been no confirmed participants for the protest following discussions held. Citizens are advised to carry on with their regular routines. Any attempts to engage in looting or vandalism will not be tolerated.”
