Reps, monarch respond to Obasanjo’s remarks on corruption

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been criticized by the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon in Oyo State, Oba Francis Alao, for portraying himself as morally superior.

The monarch’s statement follows Obasanjo’s recent assertion that many current Nigerian political leaders lack moral integrity and deserve imprisonment.

Deputy spokesman for the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, refuted Obasanjo’s claim that lawmakers set their own salaries and accept bribes from the executive.

Obasanjo emphasized the need for a “moral rearmament” among leaders and citizens to steer the country towards progress.

Speaking in Abeokuta, Obasanjo criticized the governance system and suggested reforms while indicting the conduct of certain officials.

In response, Oba Alao challenged Obasanjo to lead by example and face accountability for his leadership during his tenure.

The monarch accused Obasanjo of squandering funds on failed projects, questioning his credibility to judge others on corruption.

Alao urged Obasanjo to desist from presenting himself as untainted and urged him to correct the alleged shortcomings during his time in office.

Furthermore, House of Representatives’ deputy spokesperson Philip Agbese condemned Obasanjo’s allegations and defended the integrity of the current legislative assembly.

Agbese underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in the present House of Representatives under Speaker Tajudeen Abass.

He refuted claims of salary manipulation and bribery, emphasizing the commitment of the current administration to serve the public.

Agbese highlighted the differences in leadership approaches between Tinubu’s administration and past regimes, praising the current administration for its diplomatic and consultative engagement with legislators.

He dismissed accusations of monetary inducements and cited the current leadership’s dedication to national development goals.

Agbese contrasted the methods employed by Obasanjo during his presidency with the more principled approach adopted by the current administration under Tinubu.

He reiterated the commitment of the House of Representatives to upholding constitutional values and serving the interests of the Nigerian people.

Agbese concluded by asserting that the current leadership, unlike past administrations, prioritizes national progress over personal gain and political maneuvering.
