Reps lose fourth member in one year

The lawmaker representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State in the House of Representatives, Abubakar Adams, is dead.

Adams, an ex-football player, won the federal parliamentary seat on the platform of the Labour Party in the 2023 National Assembly elections.

His death was announced in a statement on Tuesday by the  House spokesman, Akin Rotimi.

It noted that Adams, 39, died in the early hours of Tuesday.

Adams’ death is the fourth in the past year as the legislative chamber, in October 2023, lost Abdulkadir Danbuga, who represented Isa/Sabon Birni Federal Constituency of Sokoto State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

On May 10, 2024, the House also lost 46-year-old Isa Dogonyaro, an APC member who represented Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State.

Last week, on July 10, 2024, Adewale Akinremi, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency, Oyo State, passed on at the age of 51.

In a statement by Rotimi on Tuesday, the House described the deceased as “a dedicated public servant, passionate sports administrator, and kind philanthropist who, until his demise, chaired the House Committee on Sports.

“He was a first-term member of the House of Representatives, representing the good people of Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.

“The dear departed lawmaker was a kind and gentle humanitarian, loved by all who knew him. His dedication to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria was unwavering, and his contributions to the House will be deeply missed.

“The House of Representatives extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and constituents of our dear colleague, as well as the good people and government of Kaduna State.”

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, also mourned Adams, describing as a courageous politician who spoke truth to power.

In a condolence statement issued in Abuja by the National Publicity Secretary of the LP, Obiora Ifoh, the party’s chairman said the news of Adams’ death came to him as a rude shock.

Abure said, “We have interacted very closely and was one lawmaker who spoke truth to power even at his young impressionable age. Though he was barely one year in office, his impact on the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency and the entire Kaduna state was huge. Just a few months ago, he donated transformers, cars and motorcycles to communities and individuals and also empowered all the ward chairmen and several women from his constituency across political divides with huge sums of money.”
